If you think speeding fines are already steep, brace yourself! Under new proposals the maximum fine for speeding on the motorway could be quadrupled from £2,500 to a whopping £10,000.
The plans are part of a package designed to give magistrates greater power to deal with offences which impact on everyday life. Other proposals include raising the maximum speed fines on roads from £1,000 to £4,000 as well as dramatically increasing the fines for using a mobile phone whilst driving.
A survey carried out showed that 70% of motorists consider the increase in fines to be too swingeing, although perversely only 8% said the proposals would actually make them slow down!
Just by the way, in other speed relating news, the country’s busiest camera has been identified in Greater Manchester at Junction 5 on the M60. The camera caught 9,326 offenders in 2013 netting fines of £189,140.
