I have worked at Westhill for almost six years, having responded to a call for assistance from the MD - a lifelong friend who affectionately recalled my part in bringing him into the insurance industry some 30 years previously! My career in insurance began as a fresh-faced District Agent with the Pearl Assurance Company, way back in 1979. I went on to work for the Legal & General as an Inspector and then for an independent broker for a short while before leaving the industry to pursue field sales opportunities with a variety of companies. In the 90’s I somehow ended up with my own business in……… Double Glazing! I’d like to explain how that all came about, but that’s a whole story all of its own for another day.
As Operations Director my role is about as varied as you could possibly imagine and then some! I aim to assist each and every colleague in all they require, as and when. For me, it is particularly enjoyable to have such a wide brief and no two days are ever the same. We are a closely knit group at Westhill and, when in the office, I consider it my absolute duty to maintain high spirits with banter, anecdotes and observationalist humour (even if I do have to explain it, or draw pictures, for some of my colleagues!)
I enjoy the challenges of maintaining and enhancing the reputation Westhill has built over the years and, as we surge forward beyond our 30th year of trading, it is a very different world to that when I started with the Pearl all those years ago. My ambition is to help the company continue to grow from strength to strength and to further develop an ethos of total service, whereby whatever insurance needs they may have, our clients simply make one call – to Westhill.
In 2000 I moved my family to Shrewsbury, where we have thoroughly enjoyed life ever since. Married for 29 years to Sarah, our children, Sarah and Rob, are now grown up and pursuing their own careers - filling us both with pride in all they do. Much as the journey to and from Shrewsbury each week presents its own difficulties and demons, I could not imagine ever moving away – but maybe a helicopter would be a welcomed addition to the family fleet! My interests away from work are music (especially live), cooking, the countryside, architectural history and all things football – particularly my beloved Crystal Palace FC. (Come on you Eagles!)
