The costs of flooding so far

There has been much written in the press about how much the floods have cost and how insurers are responding to this. The ABI (Association of British Insurers) has issued figures which explain how the industry has reacted so far. These cover the period from 23 December 2013 to 12 February 2014.

  • £14 million spent on emergency payments to households and businesses
  • £24 million spend on immediate alternative accommodation, this is across hotels, bed & breakfast accommodation, apartments and rented properties
  • 1,800 extra staff reassigned to customer facing roles since the start of the flooding More than
  • 5,000 loss adjuster visits and 2,000 loss adjusters ready and waiting for when the waters recede.

The weather has not really calmed down yet, and people still live in fear of waters rising in certain areas – especially as this is the season for the Neap Tides (spring high tides).
