Investigations into the selling of fake car insurance leads to the arrest of 27 people!

Ghost-broking is a scam which costs the insurance industry – as well as honest policy holders – a fortune each year. It is estimated that as many as 20,000 people could have fallen foul of the practise, where criminals offer cheap but bogus deals to motorists.

Ghost brokers often set up fake websites, use social media and post classified adverts offering cheap insurance policies. They tend to target young drivers and those with little knowledge as to how insurance works, and they have recently been targeting university campuses.

Those taken in by the scam are often blissfully unaware that they are actually driving without insurance and could have their vehicle seized, face large fines and even incur a criminal record.

In an attempt to crack down hard on this horrible practice, more than 160 officers, led by the City of London Police's Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department (IFED) took part in the dawn raids, which saw arrests made in London, Manchester, Thames Valley and the West Midlands

Of those arrested, twenty five were detained on suspicion of committing fraud by false representation, while one person was arrested on suspicion of burglary and one on suspicion of immigration offences.

What is most worrying is that the ghost-brokers target those who can least afford the devastating financial and personal consequences of being involved in an accident without valid insurance. That is why it is vital to check whom you are buying your insurance from! Don't be scared to call a broker – our friendly team at Westhill Insurance Services will make sure we find you the best deal to suit your budget. As an independent broker we will shop around to make sure we find the best option for you, making sure you don't pay for things you don't need, but have the right cover to suit your needs.
