The MIB – the good guys whose reputation is being ruined

Be aware, there is another scam out there to worry about! If you are called from someone about an insurance claim who says they are from the MIB or indeed say they have got their information from the Motor Insurance Database – proceed with caution!

The MIB Group consists of the Motor Insurers' Bureau and subsidiary companies Tracing Services Limited, MIB Management Services Limited and MIB Portal Services Limited. Their mission is to significantly reduce the level and impact of uninsured driving in the UK, compensate victims of uninsured and untraced drivers fairly and promptly and to provide first class asset management and specialist claims services

If you receive a call purporting to be from the MIB the caller may use a few different approaches which so far have included:

> Saying they have been instructed by the MIB to call you about your accident claim
> Tricking you into giving information about any motoring accidents in which you may have been involved
> Encouraging you to falsify information so that you make claim to the MIB
> Trying to get your banking details so that your 'compensation' can be paid directly into your bank

The MIB does of course make legitimate calls which may be for a variety of reasons, for example:

> Contacting individuals or their legal advisors regarding claims involving accidents with uninsured or untraced drivers
> Contacting a named defendant/third party claim
> Contacting the registered keeper of a vehicle who does not appear to be insured (and the MIB will write to these people informing them how to avoid a fixed penalty notice from the DVLA)

The MIB does NOT:

> Call the public about claiming for motor accidents unless you have already made a claim to the MIB
> Sell or give out the information help on the motor insurance database to unauthorised third parties
> Ask for your bank details via the telephone

If you do receive a call which is suspect, try and help the MIB stop this activity and crack down on fraud by asking the caller some simply questions:

> Their name
> Their phone number (ask for one before dialling 1471 when you hang up)
> The company from which they are calling (bit of a trick question this, see what they say!)

You can contact the MIB on 01908 830001 or by email at feedback@mib.org.uk with the information you gather, or to alert them to a possible scam. The MIB work with Action Fraud and also the Commissioners' Office to stop these people benefiting from fraud and are one of the 'good guys' in the insurance industry.
