Pretend to put your foot in it and you will be told to hop it!

A Shrewsbury man who attempted to con a hotel insurer by making up a story of how he had hurt his leg falling down a manhole has been given a suspended prison sentence.

The man told his insurers that the manhole cover outside a local hotel was broken, submitting a claim for £17,000 and attaching a photograph as evidence of the state of the manhole cover. In reality, the 55 year old man had injured himself in a completely separate incident and taken a photo of a random manhole cover which was in a damaged state.

On attending the hotel, the insurance representative found the picture did not match the hotel's manhole cover and so referred the case to the Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department (IFED) for investigation. Soon after, detectives travelled to Shropshire to make an arrest.

The man was charged with and pleaded guilty to fraud by false representation. He was sentenced at Shrewsbury Magistrates' Court to 18 weeks' imprisonment suspended for 12 months, 100 hours unpaid work and ordered to pay £85 costs.

This man thought he could make some easy money by making up a story about falling down a hole. He may have thought it a clever con, but his sentence and criminal record should make him rethink his decision to commit an insurance fraud. There still seems to be a public perception that making bogus claims to insurance companies is somehow acceptable. However, the IFED are disillusioning people of this idea as their clean-up rate for insurance fraud is excellent. Since the unit's inception in 2012 detectives have made hundreds of arrests across the UK, secured a growing number of convictions and investigated millions of pounds' worth of insurance fraud.

So the moral of the story is don't tell porky pies and photographic evidence needs to be real!
