People buy strange things at the side of the road

A driver from Luton who used a fake no claims certificate bought from a stranger on a roadside in an attempt to save hundreds of pounds on his insurance policy has been fined. This probably underscores the saying “If it is too good to be true, it is probably too good to be true”! Besides, you may be tempted to buy a coffee or a burger from the side of the road, but an insurance no claims certificate? Surely not!

The man in question bought his bogus no claims certificate and then applied to a leading insurance company for motor insurance, stating he had a no claims bonus of six years – obviously backed-up by his fraudulent certificate. However, after a close inspection the insurance company realised that the certificate was actually a fraud and referred the case to the City of London Police's Insurance Fraud Enforcement Department (IFED) for their investigation.

When interviewed the purchaser of the certificate stated he had bought this from a stranger on a roundabout on the A20 in Kingsbury, London for the sum of £250.00. Having thought that a forged certificate bought at the roadside would be enough to dupe an insurer into giving him cheaper car insurance, this man must have been shocked to find himself appearing at City of London Magistrates' Court and receiving a criminal record as well as being ordered to pay £175 comprising fine, court costs and victim surcharge.

This is an example that insurance fraud will not be tolerated, and with the might of the IFED helping the insurance industry to bring wrong-doers before the courts, the future looks bleak for those trying to dupe the insurance companies. This is indeed good news for those people who honestly pay their premiums and are fed-up with increases as a result of the actions of those who try to rip-off the insurance industry.
