Some 30% of men and 17% of women have been convicted of speeding with the main age group admitting to driving faster than the speed limit being 35-44 year olds. This indicates that speed cameras are actually not helping and in fact they have been proven to cause other problems, such as erratic driving behaviour.
Research indicates that when approaching a speed camera, more than a third of drivers look at their speedometer instead of at the road! Some 20% admit they slow down to the speed limit when they drive past the camera and 8% say they find themselves slamming on their brakes, which risks rear-end shunts!
Speed restrictions are there for a reason, to maintain a level of safety for both motorists, cyclists and pedestrians. It is therefore worrying to learn that some motorists are exceeding the limits by over 100mph.
If caught, drivers can get points on their licence, be issued with a steep fine – even face a ban, and will almost certainly see a hike in their insurance premiums. This at a time when many people are struggling to make ends meet, makes no sense at all. A little thought and forward planning could avoid all the worry and expense.

In reality, speeding does not generally get you there faster. You very rarely make up lost time on a journey and all you may do is hasten your journey into the next world instead of getting somewhere sooner in this world! So next time you hit the snooze button on your alarm clock, stop and think if you can really afford those extra five minutes under the duvet – and if you can, make sure it doesn't lead to you having to drive over the speed limit to reach your destination on time. It really isn't worth it.
