Flooding – what to do if a flood alert is issued near you

Over 5 million people in England and Wales live and work in properties that are at risk of flooding from rivers or the sea.

Once again the British weather let us down and our barbeque summer was mostly a wash out. Whilst that is just a memory now, the ramifications of all that water falling from the sky is still hitting us hard.

Vast areas of the UK have sodden ground, unable to absorb more water and so channel it safely, and this is resulting in rivers and their tributaries being unable to cope with the excess water – and this spells worry for a huge number of people. There are measures you can take to protect your property, and here we offer a few key suggestions:

In order to protect your home, Government advisors suggest that you:

> Check your home and buildings insurance and make sure you are covered for flooding
> Check if damaged belongings will be replaced with new ones (new for old)
> Make sure you know how to turn off your gas and electricity
> Keep a kit of essential items such as insurance documents, a battery powered torch, radio and first aid kit, place them in a waterproof bag
> Buy specialist flood protection products which have the BSI Kitemark
> If you have any insurance worries at all, for sensible advice - call Westhill Insurance Services – flood insurance experts.

Action you must take:

Most people think in terms of protecting their sentimental items – photographs etc. Whilst this is commendable and very necessary to your peace of mind and also a huge comfort, try and take a pragmatic view too. Remember that you need your computer – it is not a luxury – it contains everything from family photographs to your address book, diary and often vital documents. Make sure it is properly backed-up and that the backup is kept in a safe (dry) place. Pay special attention to your mobile phone – you will need it to call family and friends in case of problems – and your insurers too. Make sure all your important numbers are stored on your phone. Take care with your charger, make sure you always know where it is and that this too is kept dry and safe. If mainland phones and electricity is lost, you will need your phone – so make sure you keep it fully charged, just in case.

Read your insurance policy NOW. Don't wait until you are under several feet of water – check now to see exactly what you are covered for. Take expert advice: at Westhill Insurance Services we have a whole host of experience dealing with properties at risk of flooding, and those which have suffered water damage as a result of burst pipes and other domestic problems, too. Many insurers shy away from insuring properties situated on flood plains – not us though! If you have any questions or feel you need some reassurance, give one of our friendly team a call and make sure that should the worst happen, you can head to the high ground with complete peace of mind.
