The best places to live in the UK are

It seems that we are often reading in the press articles which tell us which areas of the country we are likely to be burgled in, have our cars stolen, be mugged etc – but this survey is actually more interesting than most. It prudently and helpfully points out that just because you live in an area targeted by criminals it may not be a 'bad' area in which to live: many locations quoted have very affluent areas which makes them attractive to thieves for the pickings on offer – it's almost a no win situation!

A recent survey analysed some three million home insurance quotes and found that for every 1,000 residents of Stoke Newington in north London, almost 34 had previously made a theft related claim. That is a high proportion of claims for one area. London and Yorkshire featured among those with the highest proportion of burglary claims, including Streatham, Wood Green and Mill Hill in the Capital whilst swathes of Bradford, Leeds, Doncaster and Sheffield all had black spots too, with an above average number of home insurance claims.

There is much you can do to protect your home from intruders – many common sense actions such as installing security lighting, making sure windows and doors are secure, leaving lights and radios on whilst you go out: simple steps to put off would-be chancers from stealing from you. However, there is also the fact that if someone really wants to break into your home, they probably will succeed – but you can make it harder for them!

Meanwhile, we would like to present some happier news and here we list the postcode districts where you are least likely to be burgled:

> LL18 – Bodelwyddan, Denbigshire
> IV30 – Elgin, Moray
> SR8 – Peterlee, County Durham
> PR25 – Leyland, Lancashire
> CF39 – Porth, Rhondda
> LE15 – Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire
> HR4 – North Hereford, Hereford
> BN23 – Eastbourne, East Sussex
> EH22 – Dalkeith, Midlothian
