You couldn't make it up – could you?



It seems some people are indeed completely devoid of any common sense with the huge number of ridiculous and bogus insurance claims filed each year. Whilst they are often caught out, fraud costs the insurance industry a massive £2billion a year – and we're all footing the bill through a hike in premiums. Ranging from the plain ludicrous to the utterly impossible, the imagination of these fraudsters knows no bounds!

Bogus insurance claims in the UK rose by almost 10% in 2010 from 2009 to an average of £18 million every week, according to information from the Association of British Insurers. Investigators uncovered 133,000 fraudulent claims – around 66,000 of these related to home insurance and around 40,000 to motor insurance . The ABI estimates that insurance fraud costs £2 billion a year – adding on average an extra £44 a year to the bill for every UK policy holder.

Fraudsters are constantly look for new ways to con the insurance companies – look at these bogus claims:

> A claim for a back injury while working in a nightclub was rejected when images posted on Facebook showed the claimant performing gymnastics
> A claim for face injuries said to have resulted from a falling toilet roll holder in a fast food outlet was rejected when it was shown that the equipment would have had to have fallen upwards to cause the injury
> A claim by a woman for the loss of a £2,000 watch after a night out was rejected when the photograph she provided of her allegedly wearing the watch turned out to that of a friend
> A claim for an injury said to be caused by falling over a wall was rejected when it was proved that there was no wall present at the scene of the alleged injury

Over the last 5 years both the number and the overall value of such frauds detected has risen by over 100%, the ABI confirms. Tougher surveillance measures are being introduced to tackle bonus claims and early next year the ABI is setting up a national Insurance Fraud Register which will contain details of all known insurance cheats. About time too!
