Winning the war against car theft – but Ford Transits beware!

Britain is winning the fight against car crime – at least that is what statistics indicate. Much of this victory is attributed to the manufacturers stepping up their security levels. A total of 107,000 cars were stolen last year, but this a huge reduction from 2009 when 119,00 vehicles went AWOL – and in 2008 when 143,00 vehicles went missing.

If you want to know the most popular vehicle stolen – it is the Ford Transit!

Reduction in car thefts is due mostly to the fact there has been incredible improvements across a raft of security systems including alarms, locks, immobilisers, toughened glass and tracking devices. This is backed up by the fact that the majority of vehicles stolen were more than three years old and 80 % of thieves use the keys to steal them rather trying to smash their way in. Well, you wouldn't want to unnecessarily damage the car you are stealing, would you?

Volkswagon has been named as the safest manufacturer in the British Vehicle Security Awards with Audi and Volvo coming second and third.

However, if you own a Ford Transit – beware! The ACPO Vehicle Crime Intelligence Service said that the van is popular with thieves because of its scrap value and because there is the lure of tools or other goodies being stored out of sight in the van.

The top ten list of vehicles stolen in the first three months of 2011 is dominated more by everyday vehicles, here they are:

1. Ford Transit
2. Vauxhall Astra
3. Ford Fiesta
4. Volkswagon Golf
5. Vauxhall Corsa
6. BMW 3 Series
7. Ford Focus
8. Mercedez-Benz Sprinter
9. Ford Mondeo
10. Honda Civic
