Car claims up thanks to snow

Winter weather has been responsible for a big increase in car insurance claims during December and January.

The snow and freezing conditions plus a lack of grit turned many main roads into ice rinks and caused chaos for drivers. Many had to abandon their vehicles while others suffered crashes caused by the slippery conditions.

Those who left their cars, returned the next day to find them damaged or broken into. In many cases where the vehicles were damaged no one had left details as to who had caused the damage, leaving the vehicle owner with the full bill.

If you accidently bump someone's car and cause damage it's illegal to leave without first reporting the accident and leaving your details. If this doesn't happen, the car owner is left to foot the bill from their own insurance.

There has been an increase in opportunist thefts as drivers have left their car running to defrost, unlocked with keys in the ignition, they then return to find it has been taken. The problem with this kind of incident is your insurance usually won't cover you, so be careful how you defrost your vehicle.
