Racing goes green

“Westhill Insurance – we've got it covered!”

Being environmentally minded is the future as the planet is struggling to maintain the lifestyles we have all become accustomed to. One of the least “green” sports in existence has got to be Formula 1, but even that could change if they take on board the developments that the Warwick Innovative Manufacturing Research Centre (WIMRC) at the University of Warwick has found.

Making Motorsport environmentally friendly is a difficult task but the WIMRC has come up with the WorldFirst Formula 3 race car which is exactly that. The steering wheel is made from carrots, it is powered by waste chocolate and vegetable oil, plus potatoes were used to produce the bodywork. It actually sounds good enough to eat rather than race, despite its interesting make-up the car can actually corner at 125mph.

The idea was to produce a race car made from sustainable components. The steering wheel isn't literally made from carrots but from a composite derived from root vegetables. Potato starch was used to make the wing mirrors and the engine is a bio diesel which runs on vegetable oil

Usually in car terms “green” means getting the emissions down but the WorldFirst vehicle has taken a different angle on everything and has used some cutting edge advances to make this vehicle possible.

Project Manager, James Meredith, a researcher in WMG at the University of Warwick said: “It's been very exciting working on the project and important for our team to develop a working example of a truly 'Green' motor racing car. The WorldFirst project expels the myth that performance needs to be compromised when developing the sustainable motor vehicles of the future.”
