The “Clear” Initiative keeps our motorways flowing, thanks to new technology

31/01/2012 11:51:00 Hurrah, some good news for motorists. New technology funded by the Government and the Police could drastically shorten motorway closure times after crashes. This scheme is part of the government-led initiative named “Clear” which is aimed at keeping traffic flowing on Britain’s busy road networks.

The Department for Transport (DfT) and the National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) has awarded 27 police forces across England a total of £2.7 million to enable them to purchase 37 new 3D laser scanners.

These scanners should reduce incident times by up to 39 minutes on average when they are implemented – and this could be almost straight away in some forces. The technology works by creating a 3D image of the entire crash site, cutting out the time it takes for investigators to survey each different section of a crash scene. The 3D image can be viewed on remote computers and investigators can subsequently map out measurements of vehicles in relation to each other as well as other important data.

It is estimated that we lose around £1 billion a year to traffic jams – a huge loss for the economy which is why the DfT is keen to clear-up accidents swiftly and to make sure the motorways are opened up as soon as possible following an incident. The equipment can be used 24 hours a day and will improve the capability of collision investigators, reducing delays for all road users and re-opening motorways and other strategic roads at the earliest opportunities.

It is a sad fact of life that accidents do happen, so if we can minimise the disruption, then this is a massive step forward. Remember though that vehicle insurance is not an optional item – you must ensure that your vehicle is roadworthy, taxed and properly insured. If you have any doubts, speak with a professional insurance company – Westhill Insurance Services has a team of professional and friendly experts who will help you find the vehicle insurance best suited to your needs. As an independent company, Westhill Insurance Services will take the time to shop around and make sure your budget goes as far down the road as possible to make your money go further.

Hopefully, the Clear initiative will keep our roads moving and minimise the delays that accidents cause. However, if you do have an accident, make sure you are properly insured, there is no way to escape not having insurance (and in these cash-strapped times, some people are foolishly tempted to cut back on insurance) – and it is one less thing to worry about should misfortune strike.
